Otherwise known as “natural dentistry” or “holistic dentistry”, is a form of dentistry that relies on a pretty obvious (although often overlooked) premise: the body is an interconnected system. Like nature itself, all of its various parts are connected in some way. A problem that occurs in one area of the body can have a profound effect on a distant, seemingly unrelated part.

For example, we’re starting to see more and more correlations with dental decay and gum disease, with issues like heart attack and stroke. Much of this comes down to how plaque and bacteria affects arteries in both the heart and the brain.

Consider gum disease and how it’s often treated. Problems like gingivitis cause the gums to bleed easily. Gingivitis is caused by plaque and bacteria. Cleaning the gums too roughly when treating gingivitis can result in excessive bleeding and force plaque and bacteria into the bloodstream, where it then has a direct route to the heart and brain. Knowing this, natural dentists do everything they can to keep this from happening.

When you see a biocompatible dentist, here are some things you can expect.

Biocompatible dentists use materials that are non-toxic to the human body. These days, many people are avoiding amalgam fillings, or having them removed, because they’re comprised of about 50% mercury, which is a toxic heavy metal. Not only that, amalgam fillings have no adhesive quality, and have to be forced into place. This can create microfractures in the tooth and can weaken it over time. What’s more, they expand and contract due to temperature changes, which can create further microfractures.

Biocompatible dentists will instead use non-amalgam products like resin fillings. These are non-toxic and adhesive. They also look more like your natural teeth.

Biocompatible DentistryBiocompatible dentists will also avoid metal implants, instead opting for something like Zirconia. These are implants made from zirconium oxide. Zirconia implants are non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and are actually stronger than metal implants.

When it comes to x-ray diagnostics, biocompatible dentists will often use digital x-rays. Many digital x-rays use as little as 10% of the radiation required in a conventional x-ray. This is safer for you, the x-ray technician, and the environment. They also come with many other benefits, such as faster, higher quality images that can be emailed to you immediately, and rounded digital sensors that are more comfortable on your gums.

As time goes on, dentists who don’t actually think of themselves as “biocompatible dentists” are starting to adopt these procedures and products.

Biocompatible DentistryIt makes sense, considering all of the benefits of biocompatible dentistry. Many dentists see their inherent value, and so do a lot of dental patients. In an increasingly health-conscious world, it makes sense why so many people are turning to safer dental products and procedures.

At Wellness BioDentistry, we specialize in biocompatible dentistry, using natural dental materials and gentle procedures. Our focus isn’t just on the health of your teeth and gums, but on the overall health of your body.
